BIM Summer School 2019

FRAMEWORK:

In Europe, the Architecture, Engineering and Construction (AEC) sector has known a considerable growth in recent years, mainly based on a new paradigm associated with the development and incorporation of information systems and digital tools supporting the design, execution and maintenance of constructions.

These new tools are responsible for the response to the current and future market demands, particularly those regarding the increasing construction complexity, proliferation of information, reduced deadlines and stricter cost control.

In the context of the AEC sector digitalisation, Building Information Modelling (BIM) emerges as a modernization and restructuring methodology for the construction industry, stimulating collaboration among stakeholders and promoting increased efficiency and productivity in the sector.

The BIM methodology is already a reality in many European countries where it has been a mandatory requirement in several projects promoted by public and private entities and based on specific legislation already developed or under development and implementation.

In addition, Higher Education Institutions have been addressing this topic generally with the incorporation of sparse BIM related topics in the curricula of engineering and architecture courses and with the promotion of new training offers in this field.

ISEP promotes the first edition of the BIM Summer School (BIMSSC 2019) from 10 to 23 July 2019. This summer school in the field of BIM methodology is lectured by ISEP staff and invited experts from universities and companies. The approach is essentially practical and combines the methodology and processes inherent to BIM, with its use supported by specific platforms and applications. The curricular plan of the course comprises 90 hours of contact, spread over 9 modules and a supervised project work. Visits to companies, lectures given by invited speakers and social events have also been prepared.

OBJECTIVES:

A - GENERAL OBJECTIVES

To acquire knowledge of an integrated and multidisciplinary work methodology, based on the manipulation and management of information centralized in a virtual model of a building, called Building Information Modeling (BIM). The students should be able to implement the BIM methodology in their work processes, making use of the advanced technology and procedures in the various phases of the life cycle of a building.

B – SPECIFIC OBJECTIVES

Execution of virtual models of buildings using BIM tools.

Coordination and resolution of conflicts between the various disciplines of a project, including the knowledge of methodologies of compatibility and articulation between disciplines and verification of incompatibilities, with the support of BIM tools.

Planning and control of the schedule and costs of a construction with support of BIM tools.

Process automation in the execution of the virtual model based on visual programming tools.

Knowledge of legislation and international standardization applicable in BIM area.

Understanding and applying a BIM Execution Plan.

Development of structural calculation models and understanding their connection to the virtual model in a BIM environment.

Recognize and address the importance of coordination methods during the life cycle of a BIM project.

General concepts and practical application of Facility Management principles in BIM environment.

Knowledge of new trends in BIM, related to the application of laser scanning techniques and the use of unmanned aerial vehicles (UAV), in support to the development of virtual models of existing buildings.

INTENDED PARTICIPANTS:

Undergraduate, Master's and PhD students in civil engineering, mechanical engineering and architecture. Professionals in civil engineering, mechanical engineering, architecture, and other fields within AEC industry.

CURRICULAR PLAN:

The curricular plan of the course comprises a total of 90 hours of contact divided by 9 class modules and other activities:

Along with the class schedule the Summer School program will include social events, visits to Portuguese AEC companies applying BIM methodologies and talks from invited speakers.

A supervised project will be developed and presented by all participants at the end of the course.
