The 3rd edition of the Civil Engineering Symposium [3SEC 2025], which took place on May 14th, was organized by the Department of Civil Engineering and Architecture of the University of Beira Interior, in partnership with all Portuguese Institutions of University and Polytechnic Higher Education with higher education degrees in the field of Civil Engineering. 

This year, four researchers from iBuilt, Center for Innovation in Digital Construction of Instituto Superior de Engenharia do Porto (ISEP), received awards for technical-scientific excellence. 

The SEC is a national-level event that aims to provide a platform for the dissemination of academic works completed in the Degree and Masters’ in Civil Engineering, promote the exchange of experiences between students from various national schools, and promote direct contact between employing companies and finalists or newly graduates. 

Thus, it is intended to actively mobilize students in the field of Civil Engineering, giving visibility to the best works developed in an academic context or within partnerships between the academy and the industry. 

The first edition of the SEC https://www2.isep.ipp.pt/sec2021/, in 2021, was held at ISEP, being the creator and leader of this project that managed, for the first time, to aggregate all Portuguese university and polytechnic institutions with degrees in the field of civil engineering. 

Awards received: 

• Prémio +Impacto/+Impact Award - it aims to reward the end-of-graduate and master’s degree work that has the greatest positive impact on Civil Engineering in various dimensions, economic, social, environmental or technological. The merit of the work is evaluated in its contribution to sustainability, efficiency, safety, or modernization of Civil Engineering, while promoting solutions with potential to generate significant changes. 

Tomás Simões Jorge 

Title of work: Identification of defects in railway goods vehicles based on a Wayside system and using an autoenconder. 

• Prémio Apresentação/Presentation Award - For the best presentations performed during the event 

1st: João Pedro Santos Ventura 

Title of work: Geometric precision control in the assembly of metal structures using digital technologies. 

2nd: Pedro Miguel Almeida Marques de Oliveira 

Title of work: Mapping of anomalies in the outside of industrial buildings based on three-dimensional photogrammetric models. 

• Prémio Resumo – Licenciatura/Abstract Prize - Degree - It aims to reward the Abstracts of Graduate and 1st Cycle/degree works that are evident in their innovative character and practical applicability.
